Diesel engines are still trendy worldwide, especially if they are used under the hood of some working trucks. Rumors of the new 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel have been floating around for years, and it seems that this model could actually happen in the United States. If you didn’t know, Toyota filed a United States patent last year with a high-compression engine that may run on diesel fuel. In general, that means only one, the upcoming Tundra or the Tacoma, or perhaps both, will use it.
If the latest information come true, the upcoming Tacoma might use the similar engine as the Hilux model. So, it might use a 2.8-liter turbo option that could deliver around 177 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel First Look
The new 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel won’t depart at all from the regular model. This popular midsize pickup truck is positioned beneath the full-size Tundra and alongside competitors like the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado. Like before, the Tacoma mixes utility with rugged sportiness. Toyota gave the Tacoma a slight facelift for 2022, which involved a new headlight, a more attractive grille, and a few other things.
Reportedly, the upcoming truck will ride on an all-new platform shared with the full-size Tundra. Two-bed lengths are available, including an Access Cab with a longer 6-foot bed and a Double Cab with a choice of the 5-foot short bed or long bed. The Access Cab model stretches 212.3 inches, while a Double Cab long-bed measures 225.5 inches. The Tacoma is again available in trims SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-road, TRD Pro, and Limited. Each trim will get different front-end styling, making it recognized at first glance. The most recognized is a TRD Pro model that includes own unique wheels, Toyota logo in the grille, Fox shocks, skid plate, cat-back exhaust, and multi-terrain camera system.
On the inside, there is also no difference to the regular model. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel features the same comfortable cabin, allowing for four or five passengers. With a choice of Access Cab, the buyers will get two small rear seats. However, the Double Cab provides a much more roomy bench seat that can accommodate three passengers with plenty of legroom. In general, the build quality on both cabs is excellent, and there are high-quality materials on the doors, dash, and seats
On the technology side, all Tacoma models include a central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration and a standard 7-inch touchscreen. However, the manufacturer also leaves space for an enormous 8-inch variety. The most favorite feature so far, according to many customers, is a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat that’s standard on SR5 and above. TRD Sport model is our recommendation, and it features a 120-volt power outlet in the bed, a wireless phone charger, premium audio, navigation, and the ability to add more options.
Like other Toyotas, every Tacoma includes a full suite of active safety systems. The Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) is standard and it bundles lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel Specs
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is a midsize pickup truck that will finally get a new diesel engine. This model so far was available with a standard 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine, producing 159 horsepower. It uses a rear-wheel (2WD) or all four (4WD) via a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Besides, the manufacturer also offers a 3.5-liter V6 that offers nearly 120 more horses. With this one powertrain, you’ll get a choice between the 6-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmission. As for the new diesel model, it seems that it will borrow the Hilux engine. This model comes with a 2.8-liter turbo engine that should deliver around 177 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque on the Tacoma model. The current Tacoma with two first mentioned engines can tow up to 6800 pounds with rear-wheel drive, while with four-wheel-drive versions, it can pull 6500 pounds.
Debut Date and Price
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel will arrive later in the year, or at the beginning of next one. Toyota hasn’t revealed pricing for the 2022 Tacoma, but that’ll likely be announced closer to the truck’s on-sale date.
Since we expect only minor changes on the upcoming Diesel variant, the price will be around $30,000. Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, and the Honda Ridgeline are the closest rivals of the Tacoma model.
