2022 Toyota Hilux (Pickup) NOT Coming to the U.S. Here is Why

2022 Toyota Hilux vs Tacoma

The sad news was unveiled yesterday about the forthcoming 2022 Toyota Hilux. Unfortunately, it seems that the new pickup truck is not coming to the U.S. after the all rumors we heard about its comeback. Firstly introduced in 1968, this model has become an instant hit. The Hilux was being redesigned a couple of times during these years, and its popularity grows worldwide. However, it was also available in the 90s in the United States, before the Toyota Tacoma debuted and replaced it.

Generally speaking, the Hilux is one of the most selling and the most reliable truck that you can find in the segment. This luxury model is compact, attractive, and very durable. On top of that, it’s available with a proven 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that offers 201 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Besides this engine, the manufacturer also offers a 2.7-liter four-cylinder unit, as well. The redesigned Toyota Hilux should be introduced in the summertime, starting at $28,000.

Here is Why the 2022 Toyota Hilux is Not Coming to the U.S.

The simple answer is that there is no need for such a move. This model was an instant hit in 1995 in the U.S. However, back then, the Toyota Hilux wasn’t a very safe pickup, and it didn’t meet rising emission standards in this country. Therefore, Toyota pulled the Hilux from and replaced it with the fantastic midsize Toyota Tacoma.

Generally speaking, both models are very similar, and both are the most rigid trucks in the world. The main difference between them is that Tacoma doesn’t come with a diesel engine and is a few inches bigger than the Hilux truck. Also, Hilux is available in a single cab configuration while the Toyota Tacoma isn’t. Of course, Toyota could create an American Hilux variant, but there is no need for that because Tacoma completes all the emissions rules and safety standards in the U.S.

2022 Toyota Hilux Redesign

The latest 2022 Toyota Hilux will gain mid-cycle improvements, as per the latest reports. While many think that the new model will come with some significant upgrades, it will remain almost the same. In addition, its dimensionally and shape will be intact. However, besides some noticeable enhancements, the new Hilux should be much lighter than before. Still, it will use the same platform that also underpins the Tacoma U.S. pickup.

The new pickup dominates on the front with a reshaped grille and more slimmer headlights. On top of that, it will once again be offered with a three-cab setup. In addition, buyers will get an opportunity to chose single cab, extra cab, and double cab configurations. The unstoppable Hilux side profile also looks aggressive, thanks to the standard 17-inch rims in a shade of cool dark grey.

Cabin Looks More Modern

On the inside, the forthcoming 2022 Toyota Hilux will not different at all from the Tacoma model. Basically, both have modern interiors with infotainment centers that can connect to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, for 2022, the new Hilux will get some additional updates. First of all, cabin design will remain unchanged, along with the seating layout. Generally speaking, the latest pickup already looks modern, but Toyota will introduce more additional chrome accents and upholstery.

In addition, customers will enjoy the digital instrument cluster, infotainment system, phone integrations even with the entry-level model. Seats are also more comfortable, and Hilux can fit five passengers with decent headroom and legroom.

Is the Toyota Hilux Safe?

In terms of driver-assistance aids, the forthcoming pickup offers a great package of safety. However, many of those features will be optional on the entry-level models. Last year, the Hilux was rated by a five-star from ANCAP thanks to the Toyota Safety Sense package. This package includes a Pre-Collision System with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Yaw Assist, and Road Sign Assist.

Powertrain Specs

Under the hood, the forthcoming 2022 Toyota Hilux will be once again available with the same existing engines. However, as we mentioned, the new Hilux will be offered with two engine options. The first one and the base is a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine with 175 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. Besides this engine, the Toyota also offers an optional 2.4-liter unit capable of producing 150 ponies and 295 lb-ft of torque. In addition, both models will be available with eider automatic and manual transmission.

However, many rumors suggest that we may also see a new hybrid powertrain that will generate around 200 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of twisting power. Unfortunately, there is no feedback from Toyota about this unit. Unlike the Toyota Hilux, the Tacoma U.S. model is available with a much more powerful engines. This model comes with a standard 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 159 horsepower. Power is routed to the rear wheels (2WD) or all four (4WD) via a 6-speed automatic transmission. A better choice is still the 3.5-liter V6 that produces 278 horses and 265 lb-ft of torque. However, opposite the 4-cylinder engine, you can get this unit either with a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission.

Towing Comparation

In terms of towing, the Toyota Hilux takes the crown thanks to the diesel powertrain. Reportedly, this model has the ability to tow up to 7,700 lb. On top of that, it can also carry a payload of up to 2,200 lb. Meanwhile, the Toyota Tacoma offers slightly fewer numbers with towing up to 6,800 lb and with a payload of 1,620 lb.

2022 Toyota Hilux Release Date and Price

Unfortunately, the redesigned 2022 Toyota Hilux will not be available in the U.S. This iconic Toyota truck was canceled in North America and Japan due to emission regulations and safety in the 90s. Back then, it was replaced with the famous Tacoma model. However, the Hilux still continues its production in some countries like South Africa, Thailand, and Australia. From the latest information, the fresh new variant will arrive later this year, most likely by the end of the summer.

The price of the upcoming 2022 Toyota Hilux will start at around $28,000, and it could go up to 40,000 for a fully loaded model. On the other hand, if the hybrid version happens, it will cost at least $45,000. Nevertheless, the pickup truck segment is filled with many great trucks, and we cannot wait to see how the Toyota Hilux will keep up with models such as Mazda BT-50, Isuzu D-Max, and many others.
